Prescription Pill Addiction

A prescription pill addiction is a broad term used to signify the dependency and abuse of different types of narcotic prescribed pills. Due to the availability and the mixing with other illicit drugs; prescription pill addiction pills are being widely misused and are becoming a major concern across the nation because of accidental overdose and overdose deaths. According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, over seven (7) million Americans are abusing prescription drugs at any given time (SAMHSA, 2010) and despite our society’s best efforts (safe disposal of prescription pills, etc.), prescription pill addiction abuse is rapidly becoming one of the most dangerous and highly addictive substances abused to date. 3 of the most common prescription pill addiction substances categories are:

1.) Opiate prescription pills
2.) Amphetamine prescription pills
3.) Benzodiazepine prescription pills

Opiate prescription pills are pharmaceutical manufactured medications that are prescribed by doctors to alleviate pain. Opiate prescription pill addiction substances are heavily abused because they are easy to find due to being constantly prescribed to patients for a variety of symptoms and there are many different types being produced. Opiate prescription pill addiction is very dangerous because the number of accidental overdoses and death are very high. Some of the more common types of opiate prescription medications are: Lortab, Precocet, Vicodin, Morphine, Demerol, OxyContin, Oxycodone, codeine, Suboxone, Subutex, Fentanyl, and Methadone.

Amphetamine prescription pills are a narcotic stimulants that affect the central nervous system by increasing its activity. These type of pills effect the brain’s dopamine and norepinephrine neurotransmitter system and are primarily prescribed for issues relating to Attention Deficit-Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), weight loss, and narcolepsy (a sleeping disorder). However, they are abused because they allow the user stay awake for longer periods of time, reduces tiredness, improves sports and academic performance, increases endurance, boost self-confidence while providing a euphoria-like adrenaline rush. Common amphetamine prescription pill addiction substances are: Ritalin, Adderall, Dexedrine, Concerta, Vyvanse, etc.

Benzodiazepine prescription pills are anxiolytics which are primarily used to reduce anxiety and panic attacks by temporarily sedating the Central Nervous System. Other medications similar to Benzodiazepine are Barbiturates which are sedative drugs and Hypnotics which are sleep-inducing aids. These types of prescription pill addiction medications are highly addictive and can be extremely lethal when taken inappropriately without a prescription or mixed with other illicit substances. The more common types of Benzodiazepine, Barbiturate and Hypnotic prescription medications are: Xanax, Valium, Klonopin, Librium, Vesparax, Butisol, Ambien, Lunesta, and Sonata.
